For putting on my deck, railing and steps I've purchased 1,600 of this type of countersink (countersunk, countersinkeded?) wood screw:
They're actually pretty cool since the tip does the self-boring/drilling so it may be used near the end of the board(s) where splintering may actually occur. Also, the way the head is designed reduces the likelihood of splinters/wood chips from coming up from the area of the screw.
