This is an issue only when you need it, but preparation may save you some trouble and time down the line.
Of course, it really depends on what type of "gun-dispensed" item it is, but I used to use big nails to shove in the end of open caulk tubes. This is ok for keeping the tube clear if you are planning to use the caulk in a couple days, but it can become a permanent fixture there as well as sometime the nails rust and you will wast a lot of your caulk just cleaning out the opening. What a friend of mine recommended to me was to screw a large -sized wirenut that's used for connecting electrical wires. This is certainly hand y tip. I've also gotten into the habit of wrapping my opened tubes in Baggies to not only keep air from drying out the top (Wrap some tape around the tip for added tightness), but many people forget that air can get in the bottom side too and create havoc with your caulkgun
Just a couple little tips, but, hey...
